Stephen Amell is a big star in Hollywood but he has true passion for the world of professional wrestling, falling in love with the business since he was a child. In fact, Amell’s parents used to punish him by taking away his wrestling magazines.
While speaking on the Six Feet Under podcast, Stephen Amell revealed that his parents used to punish him in third grade by taking away his wrestling magazines. Those magazines, like Pro Wrestling Illustrated, were how he first learned about wrestling. Back then, he didn’t know much about wrestlers like Ric Flair or wrestling in Japan because he didn’t have access to that information.
“When my parents wanted to punish me in third grade, they would take away my wrestling magazines but I found them. But when I first discovered magazines like Pro Wrestling Illustrated, I had no idea who someone like Ric Flair was, or even about wrestling in Japan. I just didn’t have the access to know those things.”
In Toronto, most of the wrestling content Amell could see came from the WWF Magazine, which his dad brought home every month, and the shows on TV on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. He wasn’t allowed to stay up late to watch Saturday Night’s Main Event.
When there was a big event like WrestleMania 5, he either watched it live, like at the Hot Stove Lounge at Maple Leaf Gardens, or had to wait for it to come out on VHS. Even then, he wasn’t allowed to watch it right away, so he’d get up at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday to watch it.
“The wrestling content I did have access to in Toronto was mainly the WWF Magazine that my dad would bring home for me each month. Then there were the wrestling shows on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. I was never allowed to stay up late to watch Saturday Night’s Main Event.
If there was a pay-per-view, like WrestleMania 5, I remember seeing that one in the Hot Stove Lounge at Maple Leaf Gardens. If I didn’t see it live, I’d have to wait for it to come out on VHS, rent it on a Friday night, and then wait until 3:30 a.m. on Saturday to finally watch it because I wasn’t allowed to watch it the night before.”
Stephen Amell is known for his pro wrestling background, having competed at SummerSlam 2015 and at the original All In back in 2018. Therefore, we’ll have to see if he will ever return to a pro wrestling ring again in the future, as his passion for the business is simply undeniable.
