Stephanie Vaquer’s sudden loss of the NXT Women’s Championship may have shocked fans watching live, but it turns out that was exactly the point.
WWE went to great lengths behind the scenes to make sure the surprise title change caught everyone off guard—and now we know just how far they went.
According to Fightful Select, WWE intentionally kept the plan under wraps, even internally. The move was designed to protect the shock value of Jacy Jayne’s unexpected win over Vaquer on the May 27 episode of NXT.
“Naturally, steps were taken to protect the surprise NXT Women’s Championship victory by Stephanie Vaquer, including with internal rundowns,” the report noted.
Vaquer, who was coming off a big title defense against Jordynne Grace at WWE Battleground, appeared to be firmly in control during her match with Jayne—until chaos hit. After nailing her signature Devil’s Kiss finisher, Fallon Henley blindsided her with a kick to the face, allowing Jayne to score the upset win. The Capitol Wrestling Center crowd was left speechless.
But Vaquer might not be sticking around to chase the belt. PWN’s Cory Hays reports that WWE has plans to move her up to Monday Night Raw, with her main roster run expected to begin imminently.
“Stephanie Vaquer is expected to join Monday Night Raw following her loss to Jacy Jayne,” Hays reported, also noting her previous Raw appearances as a clue WWE was preparing for this jump.
With WWE taking extra steps to preserve the shock factor and get Vaquer ready for the red brand, all signs point to a big future ahead for the Chilean star.
