The WWE Universe was left scratching its head on September 8 when Monday Night RAW abruptly canceled the contract signing between IYO SKY and Stephanie Vaquer for the vacant Women’s World Championship. With no explanation during the broadcast, fans were left to wonder: where was Vaquer?
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful addressed the situation during his post-RAW show and revealed that even people backstage were in the dark.
“So, I had talent telling me they didn’t know what was going on. Like, Raw talent telling me they didn’t know what was happening with Stephanie Vaquer. There was confusion.”
Despite the mystery, WWE officials continue to insist that Vaquer is still scheduled to compete at Wrestlepalooza on September 20. According to Sapp, the internal messaging hasn’t changed.
“When I asked people within WWE what the deal was, they were like, ‘Oh, well, she’s still doing the match.’ That’s what we were all told today, that she would be at the show doing the match for Wrestlepalooza.”
Sapp added that there may be more going on behind the scenes than WWE is letting on.
“There’s probably more than meets the eye there, but WWE is adamant that the match is going to happen.”
While the exact reason behind Vaquer’s RAW absence remains unknown, the company continues to promote her upcoming clash with IYO SKY to determine the next Women’s World Champion. Whether the tension plays into the storyline or reflects a real situation behind the curtain is still anyone’s guess.
