Stephanie McMahon opened up like never before about her father Vince McMahon’s brutal childhood and personal demons—and she didn’t sugarcoat a thing.

On the latest episode of her podcast What’s Your Story with Steph McMahon, the former WWE executive sat down with WWE President Nick Khan and got personal while discussing perseverance and mental toughness.

While reflecting on whether resilience is something you’re born with or learn through experience, Stephanie brought up her father’s traumatic upbringing. She revealed that Vince suffered abuse as a child—including being beaten with a lead pipe by a man his mother was dating.

“His mindset was, if he could survive, he won,” Stephanie said. “So just surviving was winning and still is winning for him today. And I don’t know how you can ever beat someone at the end of the day if all they need to do is survive to win.”

It’s a side of Vince McMahon that fans rarely hear about, especially in the aftermath of his recent scandals, lawsuits, and his dramatic exit from WWE. Stephanie acknowledged that despite everything—good and bad—her father built an empire. But she also said he’s often his own biggest obstacle.

“He is [an empire builder] and no one can take that away from him,” she said. “No matter what, including himself, who is probably his biggest nemesis — is himself.”

The conversation gave rare insight into how those closest to Vince view his legacy—not just as a wrestling mogul, but as a deeply complex, damaged man who’s still defined by survival.
