WWE SmackDown already had plenty going on heading into the March 27 episode, but a new update suggests the biggest story of the night could involve a championship changing hands.

According to a new report from WrestleVotes on Fightful Select, WWE is planning a major title shift during tonight’s broadcast, with Sami Zayn reportedly set to capture the United States Championship. The title is currently held by Carmelo Hayes, making the possible change even more significant as WWE continues building momentum toward WrestleMania 42.

“Wrestlevotes on Fightful Select has learned that the plan for tonight's WWE Smackdown is for Sami Zayn to win the United States Title.”

This potential title switch would immediately shake up SmackDown, especially with WrestleMania 42 just weeks away. Hayes has held the United States Championship during a strong run that helped establish him as one of WWE’s rising stars, so a loss to Zayn would signal a notable shift in direction for both competitors.

The March 27 episode already features a stacked lineup, including Cody Rhodes returning to television after Randy Orton’s recent attack, Nick Aldis addressing the fallout from the violent Drew McIntyre and Jacob Fatu brawl, and celebrity crossover action featuring Jelly Roll stepping into the ring against Kit Wilson. A championship change layered onto that lineup would add even more weight to an already eventful show.

Of course, plans in WWE can shift at any moment, but the reported direction suggests fans should keep a close eye on tonight’s SmackDown in case a major championship moment unfolds live on television.
