Sonya Deville spent nearly a decade in WWE, but many believe she never got the opportunity to reach her full potential. Ultimately, WWE decided not to renew her contract and this led to her departure. As fans speculate about her next move, Deville has now made it clear she doesn’t rule out a return to MMA, leaving the door open for a potential career change again.
While speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Sonya Deville talked about her future after her WWE release. She said she loves wrestling but has the same love for MMA, considering them to be in the same category.
Deville noted that before joining WWE, she had three amateur MMA fights. The only reason she stopped fighting was because she got an opportunity with WWE. At the time, she was struggling financially and working as a bartender in Los Angeles. WWE offered her a salary to train and work out, which she saw as an incredible opportunity she couldn’t turn down.
That decision shaped the last decade of her career, but she made it clear that her first love was fighting. She stated that her MMA journey isn’t over and that the door to returning to the sport is still open.
“Listen, I love wrestling, but I love fighting in MMA just the same. They’re in the same boat right now. I had three amateur fights before I got into WWE, and the only reason I stopped fighting in MMA was because I got the opportunity with WWE. At the time, I was broke and bartending in LA, and WWE was offering me a salary to work out and train. I was like, ‘Oh my God, yeah, I would be stupid to say no.’
That decision led me down the path I’ve been on for the last decade. But my first love was fighting, so that door isn’t closed either.”
Sonya Deville dropped out of college to become a fighter, so it’s clear she still has passion for the world of MMA. Deville’s time in WWE may be over for now, but her combat sports career is far from finished. Whether she makes a comeback in wrestling or returns to MMA, she has plenty of opportunities to explore in the future.
