Hiroshi Tanahashi’s retirement at Wrestle Kingdom 20 was one of the most emotional farewells in NJPW history—but one notable name was missing from the celebration.

While legends like Jay White, Kenny Omega, Kota Ibushi, Will Ospreay, Tetsuya Naito, and Katsuyori Shibata all showed up to honor The Ace, former IWGP Champion and longtime rival Shinsuke Nakamura was absent from the Tokyo Dome sendoff. Now, Nakamura is speaking out—and his comments are equal parts respectful and reflective.

In an interview with Tokyo Sports, Nakamura explained his absence in his own way.

“I believe I did everything I could… but that it didn’t happen, well, maybe it was because I had other missions to fulfill. That’s the only way to see it. In its own way, it’s dramatic, I suppose.”

Despite missing the moment in person, Nakamura confirmed that he and Tanahashi reconnected during retirement match discussions. Their bond, already strong, deepened in the process.

“When Mr. Tanahashi’s retirement was decided, while exploring the possibility of facing him in his retirement match, despite our long-standing relationship, I felt a connection we hadn’t had before.”

The WWE star made sure Tanahashi still felt the love, sending flowers in his place. And during the match, Tanahashi paid tribute in return—hitting Okada with a Kinshasa as a nod to Nakamura. Looking to the future, Nakamura showed full support for his former rival’s next chapter as NJPW President.

“I truly thank him from the bottom of my heart. I hope that going forward, as president, he will continue to energize not just New Japan Pro-Wrestling, but the entire Japanese pro-wrestling scene.”

While Nakamura appeared on WWE SmackDown that same weekend, the absence didn’t come without emotion—just distance. The respect remains, even across companies and continents.
