Shelton Benjamin had the internet speculating during his AEW Dynamite entrance after cameras caught what looked like tears running down his face. With many fans assuming he was emotional ahead of his match with Jon Moxley, Benjamin stepped in quickly to shut that down.
The former WWE star kicked off Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite in a Continental Championship eliminator match against Moxley. But before the bell even rang, Twitter lit up with comments about Benjamin’s entrance, where he appeared to be tearing up. That led to speculation that something personal might be happening behind the scenes.
But according to Benjamin himself, there was nothing emotional about the moment — just hydration and habit. Taking to Twitter shortly after the match, Benjamin cleared it all up:
“Thanks for the concern Fans you are greatly appreciated but, I don’t do emotional, I hurt people. However before I enter an arena I do pour water on my head that tends to drip.”
Mystery solved. As for the match, Benjamin put up a hell of a fight. The rules stated that if he beat Moxley — or pushed the match to the 20-minute time limit — he’d earn a future shot at the Continental Championship. Benjamin nearly pulled it off too, locking Moxley in a triangle choke during the final minute.
But Moxley escaped, flipped Benjamin into a pinning combination, and scored the three-count just seconds before time expired. Shelton Benjamin may not have gotten the win, but he left fans talking — even if it was for a completely different reason than anyone expected.
