Shayna Baszler’s return during this week’s NXT Homecoming special had fans buzzing about a potential full-time WWE comeback — but new backstage updates clarify where things really stand.
While Dave Meltzer initially reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Baszler’s NXT appearance was a one-off and that WWE hopes she takes on a backstage role, it turns out that was only part of the story.
“Regarding Baszler, those in the company said that they expect and hope she take a coaching or producing position,” Meltzer wrote. “At this point nothing is in place and it was just a one-off thing this week.”
However, Fightful Select followed up with more accurate backstage info. According to their report, Baszler has “been backstage at NXT fairly regularly,” despite no official contract being in place for a producer or coaching position. A WWE source told them the company is simply “seeing how things go” — meaning this may be more than just a one-time cameo.
It’s worth keeping an eye on how WWE frames these types of returns. It’s not uncommon for former stars to quietly test the waters backstage before a formal agreement is reached.
For now, Baszler remains a free agent on paper, but she’s clearly still in the WWE orbit — and her presence at NXT shows suggests the door is very much open.
