WWE legend Shawn Michaels has officially weighed in on the mega-fight between Canelo Álvarez and Terence Crawford — and while he’s not claiming to be an expert, the Heartbreak Kid made it clear which way he’s leaning.
Appearing on Nightcap with Unc & Ocho, Michaels was asked about the long-awaited clash between two of boxing’s biggest names. The hosts called it one of the sport’s biggest events in years, prompting Michaels to reflect on what the fight means beyond just the matchup itself.
“So, I guess for me, the biggest thing for me is that I’m happy to see boxing back to where I guess I’ll say at least for me, and I hope that comes across well, back to where it once was. You know what I mean? I think that’s the most positive thing coming out of all of this, what everything said and done.”
As for the actual fight, Michaels admitted he doesn’t follow boxing closely — but when it comes to picking a winner, he’s sticking with the proven powerhouse.
“I will just say I’m not the most educated, but for me it’s hard to go, you know, against Canelo, right? And I guess, you know what I mean? That’s just — there’s so much there, a dominance there. And I guess it in my lifetime, every time there’s been a dominance like that in boxing, yes, it’s got to end sometime. But I’m one of those people that just think that it’s not yet.”
Michaels joins Stephanie Vaquer in backing Canelo. Vaquer, who spent over a decade living in Mexico, told Sports Illustrated she’s rooting for Álvarez not just as a fighter, but as a cultural icon:
“I’ve been fan from Canelo. I live in Mexico 10 years, 11 year. So I try to support the Mexican fighter and I know Canelo it’s amazing. I’m a big fan. So I follow Canelo.”
But not everyone in WWE sees it the same way. Bianca Belair threw her support behind Crawford, citing his undefeated record, his WWE connections — and a funny family tie:
“I’m going with Crawford. I am. I’m going with Crawford. He’s undefeated. I’m always down for undefeated streak and he’s been to a couple of WWE shows. I’ve met him backstage. He supports us. I’m going to support him and I always make a joke that my real last name is Crawford. So I’m like he might be my cousin. So I got to go with family.”
With the WWE locker room split, it just goes to show how big this fight is — even beyond the world of boxing.
