Shawn Michaels has been part of some unexpected crossover moments in WWE recently, including appearances alongside rapper Sexy Red, but he made it clear those moments aren’t carefully manufactured behind the scenes.
During a conversation with Big Gold Belt Media, Michaels was asked whether recent celebrity appearances had him thinking about lining up more crossover moments or creating dream collaborations for NXT. Instead of naming names, the WWE Hall of Famer explained that those opportunities usually happen without forcing them, and trying too hard to create moments can actually backfire. He explained that the Sexy Red collaboration is a perfect example of how these things tend to come together on their own rather than being planned out far in advance.
“No, I will say — and again one of the things in my life and in my career, and even the Sexy Red thing — those have all been things that have come about organically. And I guess that's one of the things I've learned in my life is if I try to push for too many things to make them happen, I end up screwing them up.”
Michaels went on to explain that his current mindset is about focusing on the work in front of him rather than chasing viral moments or celebrity partnerships. Instead of forcing doors open, he believes in taking advantage of opportunities when they naturally present themselves.
“So I kind of just do my best to walk through the doors that are open and not try to kick open the ones that don't appear to be.”
That philosophy also ties directly into his role running NXT, where his main goal remains developing the next generation of WWE stars rather than chasing short-term attention. Michaels made it clear that his focus is firmly on building talent that will carry WWE into the future.
“So right now it's just focusing on NXT, and the goals that we have about continuing to build stars for Raw and SmackDown and for the future of the WWE, and allowing those good things to happen as they happen and take advantage of them when they're there — but at the same time keeping my focus where it needs to be.”
Celebrity crossovers have become a regular part of WWE programming in recent years, but Michaels’ comments suggest that not every moment fans see is part of a long-term plan. In many cases, the biggest moments happen when the timing is right rather than when someone tries to force them into existence.
