Seth Rollins isn’t hiding how he feels about CM Punk and Roman Reigns potentially closing WrestleMania 42 — and despite their long history as rivals, he says he’s proud of what the moment represents.
One year after Seth Rollins, CM Punk, and Roman Reigns shared the spotlight in the main event of WrestleMania 41 Night One, things look very different heading into WrestleMania 42. This time, Punk and Reigns are expected to collide one-on-one for the World Heavyweight Championship, with growing expectations that the match will headline Night Two — a position widely viewed as the biggest spot on the entire card.
Although WWE hasn’t officially confirmed the Night Two main event, the possibility alone carries major significance. If the World Heavyweight Championship closes the show, it would mark the first time that title has headlined Night Two since its introduction in 2023.
While speaking to the Boston Herald, Rollins reflected on what it means to see the championship he helped establish potentially get the final spotlight at WrestleMania — even if he isn’t part of the match himself.
“I’m extremely proud that in all likelihood the world heavyweight championship is going to be featured as the main event Night Two of WrestleMania, which in my opinion is the true main event of WrestleMania.”
Rollins didn’t stop there. He also addressed the early criticism surrounding the World Heavyweight Championship when it was first introduced, specifically pointing to how Roman Reigns and others viewed the title at the time.
“Roman talked down about it as if it were a second-tier title when it was introduced, and so did a lot of other people.”
Rollins explained that his belief in the championship was rooted in the need for a consistently defended world title — one that would help build new stars rather than sit idle under a part-time schedule.
“I felt it was extremely important that our world championship wasn’t monopolized by a guy who wasn’t going to be there enough to help elevate the talent with that title – and that’s Roman. He took the part-time schedule and he’s earned that right.”
Despite that criticism, Rollins acknowledged the reasoning behind WWE’s approach and emphasized the importance of having a title regularly represented on weekly television.
“On the other hand, we needed a world championship that was going to be represented every week on the Raw brand, one that would allow new stars to be created. So I’m very proud that that belt will be in the main event of WrestleMania.”
Rollins has been closely tied to the World Heavyweight Championship since its creation, helping establish its credibility during its early days. Seeing the title potentially close WrestleMania — even without him involved — marks a full-circle moment for a championship that initially faced skepticism from both fans and competitors.
With CM Punk and Roman Reigns expected to collide on the biggest stage, the spotlight isn’t just on the match itself — it’s also on the legacy of the World Heavyweight Championship and what it represents moving forward.
