Seth Rollins’ recent injury at WWE’s Saturday Night’s Main Event may have just blown up the company’s original plans for SummerSlam.
The incident happened during the event at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena in front of nearly 12,000 fans. Rollins tweaked his knee after a bad landing during his match with LA Knight. The injury appeared to be real, and medical personnel weren’t prepared for the situation, confirming this wasn’t a storyline.
Following the incident, Bryan Alvarez discussed the backstage chaos that unfolded in real time. According to him, the injury caused a scramble that derailed the show’s planned finish.
“The whole last 40 minutes of that show were in disarray. I was told they had something planned for the end of the show which was not a Seth Rollins cash-in, but they had something planned for the end of the show, and because of this injury, it did not happen. So there were a lot of people that were working live on this show who, in the middle of a live event, were told, ‘Seth is hurt, we gotta change it.’ So they were scrambling and doing this.”
Rollins was originally set to win the match, but an audible was called mid-match and LA Knight walked away with the victory instead. While WWE never officially confirmed the injury, sources close to the situation revealed it is very much real.
Now, the situation has escalated further. Dave Meltzer gave an update on Wrestling Observer Radio, and what he said makes it clear that WWE had completely different plans just one week ago. Rollins was heavily positioned for a SummerSlam main event spot against Roman Reigns—until that changed overnight.
“From last week’s show, it was very clear that it was going to be Roman Reigns against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam. I mean, very obvious, OK? It’s very obvious. Tonight, it’s very clear that it’s going to be Roman Reigns against Bron Breakker—or a tag with Roman and Jey against Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed. So something happened.”
Meltzer added that this pivot was abrupt and unplanned, further hinting that Rollins’ injury must have forced WWE’s hand.
“There’s no way this was the plan a week ago Monday. There’s just no way. He wouldn’t have done that promo clearly building Roman Reigns and him for the singles match, which was the plan for SummerSlam.”
Whatever WWE had set in stone for one of the biggest matches of the summer is now shattered. If Rollins is indeed dealing with a serious injury, it’s unlikely he’ll be part of SummerSlam at all—just weeks before the show.
It’s an unfortunate setback for one of WWE’s biggest stars, especially when momentum was clearly on his side. For now, the company seems to be pivoting quickly, but losing a match like Reigns vs. Rollins this close to the event is no small blow.
