Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch are now one of WWE’s most powerful couples, but things almost crashed before they even began—because Rollins was deep in a polygamy mindset when their friendship started turning romantic.
Speaking on Something’s Burning, Rollins said that back in late 2018, he was going through a personal spiral. He had convinced himself that having multiple partners was the only lifestyle that made sense. Becky, who was just a friend at the time, stood by him—even when things started to get complicated.
“I was going through an existential romantic crisis at the end of 2018 where I thought polygamy was the answer, and she was guiding me through this — as a friend. I became single, she was single, and then I started to make some, you know, ‘Hey, maybe we should fool around a little bit. Maybe we should just be more than friends.’ Casual — you know what I mean? Very casual.”
But Becky wasn’t about to get emotionally entangled in something that didn’t have a future. She made her boundaries clear and told him straight up—if there wasn’t going to be anything real, she wasn’t going to get involved.
“She’s like, ‘Look, we should just be friends. You should go do what you want to do. You’re so excited about this. If we’re not going to be in, then let’s not waste our time… I’m happy for you that you found this side of yourself and I’ll support you, but I’m going to be your best friend.’”
Becky later explained her decision came from self-protection. She didn’t want to suppress her feelings just to accommodate a situation with no future.
“If I’m doing this thing with him, and I’m very aware that it can’t go any further, then I’m like wearing some armor so I’m not feeling anything. So what’s the point?”
Rollins admitted his beliefs about polygamy weren’t about freedom—they were about fear. He had a history of dragging out relationships and avoiding confrontation while constantly being on the road, which made him believe he could never be good for one person.
“I thought I needed to just be single. But I turned it into, ‘I can never be in a relationship in my whole life. I just can’t be good to one person.’ So I almost ruined things with her.”
After agreeing to just be friends, Seth had a revelation. Two days later, he called Becky back and told her he didn’t want to lose her—that she was the person who made his life make sense. She didn’t say yes right away.
“I think I gave it two days, and I called her back and I was like, ‘Hey, I think that’s a bad idea. I think we should just be together.’ And she was like, ‘No.’ She protested — protested. I was like, ‘No, I need you now. You’re the thing that makes life okay.’”
Their love story is proof that boundaries matter—and sometimes, the person who challenges you the most is the one who changes your life. Becky didn’t just become Seth’s partner—she helped him grow up.
