WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner was one of the hardest-hitting wrestlers during his prime and there are a lot of things he prefers about his generation of wrestlers. That’s precisely why Steiner has now criticized modern-day pro wrestlers for being spot monkeys.
While speaking with Busted Open Radio, Scott Steiner criticized modern pro wrestling for focusing too much on flashy moves instead of making matches feel real. He called it a “spot show” with wrestlers doing move after move, like a DDT, but then popping right back up as if nothing happened.
Steiner compared it to a performance or show and said wrestling needs to feel more real. Moves should make sense, and wrestlers should act like a punch or an eye poke actually hurts, just like it would in a real fight. Steiner thinks the lack of selling in matches makes them less believable and hurts the overall quality of wrestling today.
“You know, it’s too… it’s a spot show, you know? A bunch of spot monkeys—that was the term. It’s like, man, nowadays, you take a DDT, and they pop up and go right back to doing a DDT again, like nothing really means anything. It’s almost like a performance with the stars. Yeah, it’s like a performance.
I wish they would scale it back. You’ve got to make it make sense. You can’t just have somebody punching you in the face and acting like it didn’t hurt. In a real fight, a punch is going to hurt. A poke in the eye is going to hurt. That’s the only thing I don’t like—it doesn’t make sense.”
The Undertaker has also shared similar criticism for modern-day professional wrestling. In fact, Steiner’s comments bring up a long-running debate among fans and wrestlers about how wrestling has changed. While today’s fans enjoy the athletic moves and fast action, many older wrestlers think the storytelling and psychology that were important in the past are being forgotten.
