Santos Escobar might be closing the book on his WWE career, as the former NXT Cruiserweight Champion’s WWE contract is “up very soon,” and there’s no clear sign he’ll be sticking around.

Escobar’s absence from WWE television hasn’t gone unnoticed. He’s been off TV for months and hasn’t wrestled on a televised show since February. His last in-ring appearance was at a WWE Supershow in Mexico—far from the spotlight he once held. Adding fuel to the fire, he’s posted cryptic messages on social media, prompting concern among fans.

Sources told Fightful Select that while an extension may have been discussed, nothing has been confirmed.

“It hasn’t looked like he’ll be staying with the company as of now,” one WWE source reportedly said.

Escobar joined WWE in 2019 and quickly rose to prominence in NXT as the unmasked leader of Legado Del Fantasma. Before that, he wrestled across CMLL, AAA, TNA/IMPACT, and as King Cuerno in Lucha Underground. He’s long been considered one of the most versatile and charismatic luchadores to make the jump to the U.S. market.

After transitioning to the main roster, Escobar found himself paired with Rey Mysterio as part of the Latino World Order, only to turn heel and reassemble Legado Del Fantasma. But with creative direction stalling and the faction’s momentum slowing down, Escobar quietly vanished from programming.

If this really is the end for Santos Escobar in WWE, the wrestling world is wide open. A return to CMLL—or a run in AEW—is very much on the table. Wherever he lands, he won’t be short on options.

Are you surprised to see Santos Escobar potentially exit WWE? And where do you think he should go next—Mexico or AEW? Let us know what you think in the comments.
