Santos Escobar’s future in WWE is no longer a question—it’s a deadline.

According to a new report from PWInsider, the former NXT Cruiserweight Champion’s contract with WWE expires at midnight tonight, officially making him a free agent and free to wrestle anywhere he chooses.

This update comes after months of speculation fueled by Escobar’s absence from WWE television and his cryptic social media posts. His last televised match took place back in February, and his most recent in-ring appearance was at a WWE Supershow in Mexico. While WWE reportedly made moves to keep him, Escobar appears to have decided it’s time to move on.

“Unless there is a last second Hail Mary pass that leads to him agreeing to a new deal, Santos Escobar will depart WWE as of midnight,” PWInsider reported. “At that point, he will be a free agent and available to wrestle or sign anywhere he wishes.”

WWE sources also told the outlet that they offered Escobar a higher contract to stay, but he turned it down. The 41-year-old star has built a remarkable résumé over his career. The son of lucha legend El Fantasma, he first made his mark as El Hijo del Fantasma, winning the CMLL Middleweight and World Trios titles before moving on to AAA, where he held both the Tag Team and Cruiserweight Championships.

In the United States, Escobar gained national exposure as King Cuerno in Lucha Underground, where he had memorable feuds with Killshot (AEW’s Swerve Strickland) and Johnny Mundo (John Hennigan, also now with AEW). He signed with WWE in 2019, where he unmasked, formed Legado Del Fantasma, and held the NXT Cruiserweight Championship for over 300 days before being called up to the main roster.

With his contract officially expiring tonight, the next chapter of Escobar’s career is wide open. Whether he returns to Mexico, heads to AEW, or explores another destination, one thing is certain: the lucha veteran will be in demand.

Do you think Santos Escobar made the right call by turning down WWE’s offer? And where should he make his next move—AEW, CMLL, or somewhere else entirely? Share your thoughts in the comments.
