Just as word broke that Santos Escobar had re-signed with WWE, the former NXT Cruiserweight Champion posted a masked photo of himself—one that resembled his original WWE look. The timing couldn’t be ignored, especially since he hadn’t used that mask since unmasking to lead Legado Del Fantasma.
While it’s not confirmed that he’s returning to the masked character, the image has raised questions about a potential shift in his presentation. Whether it’s a teaser or a full creative pivot, Escobar seems to be setting the stage for something different.
His contract expired at midnight on October 6, 2025, and his profile was quickly moved to the alumni section of WWE.com. He then posted “Palante”—Spanish for “onward”—on social media, hinting at his exit. But just two days later, WWE struck a new deal with him after addressing creative concerns and offering a “significantly higher” financial package.
Escobar has not returned to the ring since his last televised match, a loss to Rey Fenix on the May 2 episode of SmackDown. His most recent appearance was at the AAA x WWE: Worlds Collide event in June. As of now, it’s unclear when he’ll be back on television—or what version of himself will show up when he does.
This latest move could signal a character reset or simply be a nod to his roots. Either way, Escobar’s WWE story just got a new chapter—and we’ll be watching closely to see what it looks like.
