Santos Escobar’s WWE contract expired at midnight on October 6, 2025, and his profile was promptly moved to the alumni section of WWE.com. The move, combined with his social media post captioned “Palante”—Spanish for “onward”—suggested his exit from the company was complete.
But just days later, the entire narrative flipped. As of October 8, Escobar and WWE have reached a new agreement, according to PWInsider. The former NXT Cruiserweight Champion is officially back with the company.
The last-minute deal came after WWE addressed his creative concerns and made him a “significantly higher” financial offer than any previous proposals.
This reverses what many in the industry believed was a done deal. Escobar’s departure had been expected internally for some time, and discussions around a potential AEW move were already circulating. Instead, the Mexican star is staying exactly where he’s been since signing in 2019.
During his run with WWE, Escobar unmasked, created Legado Del Fantasma, held the NXT Cruiserweight Title for over 300 days, and most recently appeared at the AAA x WWE: Worlds Collide event in June. His final SmackDown match was a loss to Rey Fenix on May 2.
Now, with a new deal in place and creative adjustments made, Escobar’s WWE career enters its next phase. Santos Escobar just proved that in pro wrestling, nothing’s official until the ink dries. What looked like a clean break has now turned into one of the year’s biggest contract reversals, with WWE locking him back in before he could even take a breath as a free agent. Whether this fresh deal reignites his momentum or just buys the company time remains to be seen—but one thing’s for sure, Escobar’s story in WWE is far from finished.
