Samoa Joe’s iconic “Joe’s gonna kill you” chant has been synonymous with his career for two decades and now he has revealed the origin of these chants.
While speaking on Marking Out, Samoa Joe was asked about his famous “Joe’s gonna kill you” chant and when he realized it had become something bigger than just part of his character.
Joe explained that the early days of TNA were wild and really helped him build his fan base. It was where he made his mark on the national scene. Going into matches with AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels, he started to notice the chant picking up steam.
It wasn’t something he ever pushed in promos or encouraged the crowd to say, it just happened naturally. He recalled only using it once in a promo, and that was long after fans had already made it a regular chant.
“That’s interesting. I mean, TNA was a pretty wild ride early on because it’s kind of where a lot of my fan base was garnered. It’s where I kind of made my splash on the national scene. So yeah, man, I think kind of going into the matches with AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels at the time, when the chants started to pick up—it really took a life of its own. I mean, it was never something I ever said in a promo. It was never anything that I had preempted the crowd or prompted the crowd to say. I think I’ve used it once in a promo, and that was months after it had already been chanted.”
The Samoan Submission Machine also gave credit to Taz, pointing out that the chant actually started in ECW. When ECW folded, Ring of Honor stepped in to fill that void in the Northeast.
Joe said many of the same fans who sat in the front row at ECW shows were now at ROH events, and they brought that culture with them. That chant eventually carried over into both ROH and the TNA era, becoming part of Joe’s identity.
“Shout out to Taz, man. That originally started as an ECW chant, and if you know, you know—ROH very much filled that void in the northeast when ECW collapsed. And much of that fan base, who were sitting in the front row at ECW shows, were sitting right there at those early ROH shows. They brought a lot of that culture with them. So that was definitely one of the chants that migrated from the ECW era into ROH and the TNA era.”
The Samoan Submission Machine’s iconic chant will forever ensure he is one of the most legitimate badasses in pro wrestling and fans really wouldn’t have it any other way.
