Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo have been together for well over three years now and their real-life relationship made its way onto AEW television as well. However, it appears their on-screen partnership wasn’t supposed to last long at all.
While speaking during a panel at Wrestleverse Fest, Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo were asked if there was ever a storyline they were in that didn’t go how they thought it would, or if there was something they’d want to change to make it perfect.
Tay Melo said that most storylines, about 90%, change all the time. They might plan one thing, but then it ends up going a different way for reasons they can’t control. She said it’s important to stay professional, adjust, and go along with it.
Melo talked about how she used to be a big babyface but after she and Sammy Guevara got together, they had to change that and became heels, which actually worked out really well.
Melo also said you have to enjoy the moment, even if it’s not what you planned. They didn’t mean to be on-screen together for long; it just happened. When fans started hating on them, they decided to play it up even more, turn it into something bigger, and entertain people even if it meant they were getting booed. At the end of the day, it was just a character, that’s not who they really are. Once they understood that, it was easier to just go with the flow.
“I would say that like 90% of storylines are kind of on the go, you know? You imagine one thing and then things just keep changing. There’s so many reasons for that, most of them not in our control. And then we just need to be professional, do whatever we gotta do, improvise, and be able to change. You guys know a big example with us — like I was such a good big babyface, but then we got together, and we had to tweak it, and then we tore it up as heels.
And then it’s just like, see the moments, enjoy the moments, and be like, ‘Hey, we didn’t envision it this way, but that’s where we gotta go, so let’s be professional, let’s do it.’ We didn’t plan to be on screen together for a long time — it just happened. And then because the hate in the moment was crazy and big, we’re like, ‘Well, let’s turn that up. Let’s make some money with it, let’s entertain people with it.’ Even if it means they’re gonna hate us, you know? At the end of the day, we just need to understand it’s a character we’re playing — that’s not real life, that’s not who we really are, we’re not those bad people. So it’s a little hard to understand, but once you’re on that level, you can let it just be part of the program. I think a lot of times you just go with the flow.”
Sammy Guevara added that it was actually funny how it all started. When Cody and Brandi Rhodes left for WWE, AEW needed someone to fill that spot. Tay Melo suggested they do it for just one match, a quick mixed tag that was supposed to be a one-time thing. But it didn’t stop there and turned into something much bigger.
“You know what’s funny is because Cody and Brandi left and they went to WWE, so they needed someone to fill that spot. And so they needed it for one match, Tay said, ‘Let’s do it for one match.’ That was the idea — it was just gonna be a one-off. We were gonna do a mixed tag match and then go our separate ways. That’s not how that went. Yeah, really funny.”
Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo are both mainstays of AEW and ROH programming now but they haven’t been involved in a storyline together for a long time. Therefore, we’ll have to see if AEW will decide to pair them up again, as fans feel it might work out in the future.
