WWE decided to shock the entire pro wrestling world after R-Truth and Carlito confirmed they would be parting ways with the company. Despite many people being surprised by their exits, RVD sees it differently and has now made it clear he laughs at WWE talent who are shocked by releases all the time.
While speaking on the 1 of a Kind podcast, RVD was asked about R-Truth and Carlito’s WWE departures. RVD said he wasn’t surprised that R-Truth and Carlito were let go from the company. He said every time someone gets fired, the news says WWE stars are shocked, but he laughs a little since it’s funny. He noted that WWE talent should expect these things to happen.
RVD stated that R-Truth had been with WWE for about 25 years, which is a long time. RVD didn’t know much about Carlito’s release but felt it was sad. Carlito had said he was hired but not used and wanted to work. RVD said some wrestlers like to keep working, while others don’t mind getting paid to stay home.
“I’m not going to say I’m shocked. I don’t get shocked. Every time people get fired and the headlines say ‘WWE talent is shocked,’ I always laugh a little because it’s funny. Like, when are you going to be prepared so you’re not shocked? This happens.
But it was a hell of a run. He was there what, 25 years or more? I didn’t know about Carlito. That’s a shame, because not too long ago he was saying he was hired, but they weren’t using him, and he wanted to work. Me, I’d rather get paid to sit at home, but a lot of the guys are the other way around. It’s not a good thing if you’re trying to do something with your career.”
RVD said both R-Truth and Carlito were surprised, but he wasn’t. He thinks a 25-year run is a good career. He said WWE is like a family, but it has rules and conditions, it’s not unconditional love since people can be let go.
RVD added that every year when many people get fired, some act surprised, but he never felt like he was untouchable or needed so much that WWE couldn’t do without him. Other wrestlers told him he was important, but he didn’t fully believe it.
“They’re both surprised, but I’m not. And as far as that 25-year run, whatever it was — that was a good run, right? A good run. I don’t know what it was about, but I’m never shocked because it’s only a family — a family with rules. It’s not an unconditional family. It’s a very conditional family with an expiration date.
Every year when they do mass firings and people are like, ‘I can’t believe they got rid of me,’ or, ‘I can’t believe they got rid of so-and-so,’ I always think — man, I’ve always been vocal about this — I never felt untouchable.
Never in my career did I feel like, ‘I’m not expendable. Without me, this company would fall apart. They need me.’ I’ve had wrestlers say to me, ‘Bro, what are you talking about? You don’t need to follow the dress code — they need you.’ Even when they’d say that, I was like, ‘Yeah, right.'”
RVD added that it’s unfortunate when people get released, but it’s part of the business. It’s disappointing, but everyone should stay humble and remember that WWE is only a “family” in a way. He said that WWE Superstars can build great relationships and meet people they can talk to for the rest of their lives, but in the end, they are just working together at the same job for now.
“It’s unfortunate. It sucks when people get released, but it’s a sad part of the business. It’s disappointing, but it’s something everyone needs to understand. It’s a ‘family’ in quotes. You build great relationships. You meet people you love and might talk to for the rest of your life — but in the end, you’re just working at the same job for now.”
Quite a lot of people hijacked Triple H’s tweet about El Hijo del Vikingo as they were outraged over R-Truth and Carlito’s WWE exits. That’s not all that happened as R-Truth’s exit made Superstars rethink their current contracts since no one expected he would ever be let go.
While R-Truth and Carlito’s leaving surprised fans and other wrestlers, RVD just wanted to remind fans that nothing is certain in WWE. In the end, fans have to accept that wrestlers leave WWE all the time, and that’s just how it works.
