We are officially at the tail end of John Cena’s retirement tour, but fans feel there were many opponents that Cena never got to face. Many wanted Cena to face RVD one more time and as it turns out, RVD was actually in talks to be part of Cena’s retirement tour.
While speaking on Inside the Ring, Rob Van Dam revealed that he was in talks to be part of John Cena’s retirement tour and even had serious interest from WWE about making it happen.
Plans were moving forward, and it looked likely that the match would take place, but an injury changed everything. After breaking both his heels, the opportunity slipped away. Even then, RVD had a positive mindset about the whole situation, saying everything happens for a reason.
“Let me tell you this—yeah, I wanted to be one of the return matches for John Cena on his retirement tour. I was talking to them, and there was a lot of interest. Without giving away too many details, we were probably going to do it. And then I broke my heels. Everything happens for a reason though, so let’s look at it that way.”
Even though the match never happened, the thought of John Cena and Rob Van Dam sharing the ring one final time will always stand out as a big “what if” in WWE history. A farewell bout between the two would have been a perfect way to honor their legacies, but sadly it just never happened.
