WWE has strict rules to improve the company, including bans on narcotics and performance-enhancing drugs. While marijuana was banned for a long time, it was recently confirmed that this is no longer the case. In fact, RVD has now accused WWE of basing its past ban on marijuana on misinformation.
While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, RVD was asked about WWE lifting the ban on marijuana. RVD made it clear he wasn’t surprised that WWE changed its stance because he always believed the ban would eventually be lifted, adding that he was ahead of the curve.
“It’s interesting in a good way. I can’t say I’m surprised. I always knew the direction that marijuana prohibition would go. I was just ahead of the curve like I am with a lot of things. I’m ahead of my time in a lot of ways.”
RVD pointed out that cigarettes were widely accepted despite their serious health risks, while marijuana was classified as a dangerous drug even though no one has ever overdosed from it. He felt it was important to educate people, but back then, few were willing to listen and accused WWE of basing its past marijuana ban on such misinformation.
“So when I started advocating and telling people, ‘Dude, put that cigarette down. That’s killing you, Marijuana is not.’ Everyone thought I was crazy back then. Smoking was so popular with cigarettes, which kills one out of two users statistically, long term, and I was learning that they say cannabis is a schedule one worst drug, but no one has overdosed from it because it’s not even possible. It was misinformation and they went through with the ban. So I was like I gotta tell people about this and stuff. Back then they didn’t want to hear it.”
RVD also noted that people often follow rules without questioning them, comparing it to stopping at a four-way stop sign even when no cars are around. He said that society once saw marijuana as harmful, but now many of the same people who opposed it use cannabis edibles to help them sleep.
“Because people like to be told what to do, they really do. I feel like people like to be told what to do, and then they determine their own self-value, self-judging by how good they’re following directions. That makes them a better person if they stopped all the way at a four way stop sign when there was no other cars around. In a lot of people’s minds, because they’re doing what they’re supposed to nowadays. Everyone before that was like, ‘Oh, marijuana is horrible.’ Now, because the government’s come around everyone’s like, well I eat a couple of gummies before I go to bed at night.”
RVD also questioned past arguments that marijuana would lead to harder drugs, noting that there has been no wave of people admitting they progressed from edibles to heroin. He believes the change in public opinion only happened because the government finally acknowledged they were wrong about marijuana.
“Now, because the government’s come around everyone’s like, well I eat a couple of gummies before I go to bed at night. It does help me sleep. What about all you guys saying it’s going to lead to harder drugs? When are all these people that are having a couple of gummies going to come out, ‘I went straight to heroin, and then that wasn’t enough.’ Because that’s what they believed before, before the government finally came around and said, Oh, we weren’t right about that.”
This comes after Michin explained that since marijuana has become more legal, WWE has become more accepting of it. She also noted that it was previously on WWE’s banned substance list but was removed a few years ago.
“Because it’s (marijuana) more legal, they’ve kind of accepted it,” Michin revealed. “So before, that used to be—marijuana used to be on the drug list, and they took that off a couple years ago.”
RVD has always been a strong supporter of marijuana in the wrestling world. His current comments show how much opinions have changed over time. Now that WWE acknowledges new laws, the discussion about marijuana use in wrestling has clearly evolved and RVD couldn’t be happier about the change.
