The narrative around Royce Keys just shifted — and it’s not as bleak as it first sounded.
After social media lit up on March 3 with claims that WrestleVotes reported WWE had “no plans” for Keys, a clarification has now surfaced. That characterization was inaccurate and the result of what was described as irresponsible aggregation. During the WrestleVotes Live Q&A, the direct quote regarding Keys was:
“Nothing. Absolutely nothing. We had speculated for months that SmackDown was the place for him. It certainly does seem like that’s going to be his home. He was backstage Friday night… Don’t know when he’s showing up on TV. Hopefully they have an idea. Hopefully this is part of the plan.”
The key distinction? WrestleVotes did not definitively state there were no plans. Instead, they said they didn’t have an update on what those plans were.
That’s a big difference. Fightful followed up and was told that things have in fact been filmed for Royce Keys. However, no additional context was provided, including whether the footage is for a vignette, reintroduction, or storyline integration. There was also no confirmed timetable for his return to television.
Meanwhile, WWE has been heavily promoting Keys’ appearance on Stephanie McMahon’s “What’s Your Story?” series, keeping his name visible even as he remains off TV. So while Keys hasn’t reappeared on SmackDown yet, the situation may be more about timing than abandonment.
Is WWE quietly setting up something bigger for Royce Keys, or is this just another case of creative limbo during WrestleMania season? Let us know what you think.
