Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson isn’t just known for lifting weights and box office numbers — he’s also built a reputation for lifting spirits. From gifting strangers with trucks to slipping servers oversized tips, Johnson says his desire to give comes straight from growing up with nothing.
During his appearance on Artist Friendly, the Hollywood megastar got real about why he goes above and beyond to give people moments they’ll never forget. It all started when host Joel Madden praised Johnson for surprising everyday people with cars and big gestures. Johnson didn’t hesitate to explain that it’s all rooted in his childhood:
“When you come from nothing, you dream of being able to buy whatever you want… and then as you get older, you realize like giving to other people — you get the most joy out of that.”
But it’s not just about material things. Johnson said the true reward is recreating the type of moment he longed for as a kid — something right out of a movie:
“That moment at the end of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where Charlie gets the whole factory — and he’s like, ‘Me? Even Grandpa Joe?’ That’s it. That’s what I try to recreate.”
Johnson added that those who came from tough beginnings know the feeling — the need to not just succeed, but to share that success in meaningful ways:
“It’s not even about us — it’s about letting them experience what our dreams were when we didn’t have [anything].”
The Rock even brings his kids into the giving spirit, teaching them to tip generously and personally hand over thank-you money to restaurant staff:
“I always tell my kids: if we have something, we give something. Even if it’s just the tip at the restaurant.”
“They’ll ask, ‘Can I give them the money?’ And I say, ‘Yeah — you go say thank you for your service.’ That’s the best.”
Johnson said that even the little luxuries — like the floors in his house — still blow him away because of how far he’s come:
“Even today when I walk into my bathroom and feel the marble floors… I never take it for granted.”
This wasn’t about PR or playing a role. Dwayne Johnson laid it all out — the joy of giving is personal, spiritual, and tied directly to the pain of growing up without. And now, he’s passing those values on to the next generation.
