Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson might be the highest-grossing actor in Hollywood today, but his first day on a movie set almost broke him — literally.

During The Hollywood Reporter’s Actor Roundtable, the former WWE Champion revealed that while filming his first acting role in The Mummy Returns, he was battling intense sickness and freezing in the middle of the scorching Sahara Desert.

“We were shooting in Morocco in the Sahara Desert and I was so sick — I probably ate something I shouldn’t have eaten,” he said. “It’s 110°, and I’m freezing. I’m wearing a blanket.”

Despite being a pro-wrestler trained to power through pain, Johnson admitted he had no idea what to expect as a first-time actor.

“Steven Sommers comes over — ‘Hey, you okay?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m okay. Let’s do it.’ He calls action… and when he says cut, I went, ‘This is what I want to do for the rest of my life.’”

That brutal experience lit a creative fire in him that never went out. Though he came from the loud, over-the-top world of WWE, Johnson said wrestling actually helped him prepare for life on a movie set — but in ways most people don’t expect.

“Wrestling really forced me — like in theater — to listen… to stay on your toes.”

Fast forward to today, and The Rock is no longer chasing just action roles or big paychecks. His new film The Smashing Machine gave him a chance to reconnect with something deeper.

“I had this obsession to do something for me,” he explained. “Am I living my dream — or mine plus a lot of other people’s and entities around me?”

His portrayal of MMA legend Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine allowed Johnson to tap into emotional territory he rarely explores onscreen.

“Mark looked invincible… but he was broken on the inside.”

From freezing in the desert to facing the heat of Hollywood expectations, Dwayne Johnson’s journey has been anything but easy. But that first brutal day on set? It changed everything.
