Disney is officially bringing Moana to life again—this time in live-action.

On November 17, Disney revealed the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Moana remake, confirming that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will reprise his role as Maui.

The teaser, which runs just one minute, offers a striking look at the real-world take on the beloved animated film. It features near shot-for-shot recreations of the 2016 original, and fans will immediately recognize the iconic “How Far I’ll Go” song playing in the background. While Johnson’s character Maui is briefly shown, the teaser avoids revealing his face—building even more anticipation for what’s to come.

Disney also released the first official teaser poster, locking in a release date of Wednesday, July 1, 2026. The film is being directed by Thomas Kail, best known for Hamilton and Grease Live, with a screenplay from Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller. Bush previously penned both animated Moana films, Encanto, and co-directed/wrote both Zootopia movies.
