Robert Stone has spent the last several years carving out a unique role in WWE, shifting from competitor to one of the company’s most recognizable on-screen personalities. Now serving as the interim General Manager of NXT, Stone says he’s completely comfortable with the idea that his days as a full-time in-ring wrestler are likely over.
Stone, who signed with WWE in 2019, originally arrived with a clear strategy. While he had previous in-ring experience, he recognized that the company’s roster already featured a stacked lineup of competitors, while the managerial lane had far fewer people competing for that spotlight.
Speaking on Busted Open After Dark, Stone reflected on the mindset that shaped his decision to lean into a non-wrestling role when he first joined WWE.
“I’m in my mid-30s. I said, there’s no other managers, no one to compete with. This is my chance to shine. I was confident speaking. I knew, ‘How much longer could I wrestle?’ Especially my style compared to how physical NXT is, so I said, ‘This is the right move for me,’ and I went all in.”
Stone has still stepped into the ring on occasion since joining WWE, competing in ten matches during his run with the company. However, he made it clear that those appearances were more about fun than trying to revive a full-time wrestling career.
“I’ve still got to wrestle matches since which is fun. But, being a full-time wrestler is something that’s in my past and I have no problem with that.”
Stone’s transition into a character-driven role has allowed him to remain a regular presence on WWE television, evolving from managing talent to his current authority position within NXT storylines.
With his ability to deliver promos and work as a personality on screen, Stone has found a niche that continues to keep him involved in WWE programming without needing to compete regularly inside the ring.
