A new detail has surfaced regarding Brian “Road Dogg” James’ departure from WWE, and it adds more context to why the longtime creative figure stepped away from the company.
Earlier reports indicated that Road Dogg had left WWE’s creative team after years of working behind the scenes, with reports noting that the departure was his own decision rather than a firing. According to that report, the word circulating internally was that James chose to step away from his role on the SmackDown creative team.
“The word making the rounds is that he made the decision to leave his position on the company's creative team, where he had been working on the Smackdown brand.”
Now another update is adding a possible reason behind that choice. Cory Hays of Bodyslam.net reports that Road Dogg’s exit may have been connected to frustration with changes to his role within WWE’s creative structure.
“He’s out. The word is he didn’t enjoy being moved out of his position.”
Road Dogg had been part of WWE’s creative team for years after returning to the company in 2014. During that time he served in multiple roles, including working as a co-lead writer for SmackDown and helping shape the weekly direction of the brand.
His departure comes during a period of internal shifts within WWE’s writing team. Alexandra Williams recently revealed that she has been promoted to Vice President and Lead Writer for Monday Night RAW after previously serving as a senior writer and producer. She confirmed the news publicly while announcing the move.
“I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Vice President/Lead Writer at WWE!”
Williams also explained the scope of her new position, which includes overseeing the creative development of WWE’s flagship weekly program.
“As VP and Lead Writer for WWE’s flagship live program, I oversee all creative development for Monday Night RAW — one of cable television’s longest-running and highest-rated weekly shows.”
While WWE has not issued an official statement about Road Dogg’s departure, the latest report suggests the situation may have been influenced by internal restructuring and changes to his creative role.
Road Dogg remains one of the most recognizable figures from WWE’s Attitude Era thanks to his run with D-Generation X and the New Age Outlaws, and he later transitioned into a long tenure behind the scenes helping shape WWE programming.
