Richard Holliday has built a reputation as one of the most confident personalities on the independent wrestling scene, but his journey back to the ring involved a deeply personal battle that nearly derailed his career.
During a recent appearance on TMZ’s Inside The Ring, Holliday spoke about his cancer diagnosis and the mindset that helped him push through treatment and return to wrestling. While he acknowledged that it’s not a subject he enjoys revisiting, he understands that sharing his experience can help others who are facing similar challenges.
“Full transparency, I don’t really speak about it too often. It’s not something that I love to relive or anything like that. But I do understand that there is a role to play in the sense that you can inspire other people, and if people hear your story then it could do wonders for them.”
Holliday explained that one of the biggest sources of motivation during his recovery came from watching other elite athletes continue to compete at the highest level after dealing with the same illness. Seeing players like Anthony Rizzo and James Conner overcome similar circumstances gave him the belief that he could do the same.
“I can say from a firsthand experience, it did the same for me. I’m a huge baseball fan and Anthony Rizzo, who at the time when I was diagnosed was the first baseman of the Yankees, he had the exact same thing. And then there was a running back in the NFL who played for the Cardinals, James Conner, exact same thing. So I’m seeing these extremely high-level athletes doing their thing, being the best in the world at what they’re doing and they had what I had. So when I was going through it, I was like, well, I can come out on the other side of this and I can be great. I can be better than I was.”
Holliday credited his mentality as a major factor in getting through the recovery process. Even during the most difficult moments, he believed that staying mentally strong could carry him through.
“I was a big believer in the mind powering the body. If you believe that you’re going to get through it, if you have faith that you’re going to get through it, if you’re a strong-minded person… it’s very difficult to be strong-minded in that situation, but you have to be. And that’s what got me through it.”
When Holliday finally stepped back inside the ring, the moment carried extra meaning. He revealed that his comeback happened quicker than many people expected, arriving less than a year after his final match before treatment.
“It was euphoric. It really was. And the best part about it was it was less than a calendar year. It was less than a calendar year from when I had my last match before everything to when I had my first match back. I want to say it was June to June, but the dates lined up where it was less than a calendar year. The doctors were impressed, to say the least.”
After Holliday’s story became public through a Sports Illustrated article, support poured in from across the wrestling industry. He explained that he had stepped away from social media and wrestling while focusing on treatment, so the reaction caught him by surprise.
“I went quiet for a bit. I just needed some time to kind of get away from everything. I stepped away from social media, wrestling, everything, and just focused on myself. When the article came out, that’s when it was like a groundswell of support from everybody in the wrestling industry, from people way high up who I had never met before to my dear friends. It was a lot.”
The response from fellow wrestlers and fans alike was overwhelming, but it reinforced how tight-knit the wrestling world can be when someone is going through a serious situation.
“It was actually very overwhelming the day that article came out. But it was good. The wrestling community is very supportive, and they proved it then for sure.”
Now fully back in action, Holliday is enjoying what he describes as one of the strongest runs of his career on the independent scene. His story has become an example of how perseverance and mental toughness can help overcome even the most difficult obstacles.
