Rey Mysterio knows the clock is ticking on his legendary career—but he’s not ready to walk away just yet. The WWE Hall of Famer opened up on LA PLATICA, admitting that retirement is creeping up fast, but watching his son, Dominik Mysterio, rise through the wrestling world has reignited his passion to keep performing.
When asked how much longer he sees himself competing, Rey didn’t shy away from the reality that the end is near.
“Oh, it’s definitely really close… it’s really close. But at the same time, I’m so motivated.”
That motivation, he explained, comes largely from seeing his son follow in his footsteps.
“A lot of people ask me, ‘What keeps you going?’ I think once my son started wrestling, that kind of pushed me to continue. I was really getting very close to calling it quits, but that just kind of… it gave me that second wind.”
Despite knowing retirement is inevitable, Rey made it clear his love for wrestling hasn’t faded one bit.
“I know I’m still going to enjoy it when I retire, but I’m going to have to tap out at some point. I still love what I do, and I always have.”
Mysterio also touched on how connecting with fans continues to fuel him, even after all these years on the road.
“I love hearing stories when I connect with fans — how they grew up watching me, or I gave them a mask at one point, or just connected with them… I love hearing stories like that, and that connection with the fans, I think that also keeps me on the road.”
Between his recent groin tear, the long list of past knee surgeries, and his acknowledgment that retirement is coming, it’s clear Mysterio is in the final chapter of his storied career. But thanks to Dominik—and the fans—he’s not ready to shut the door just yet.
