Rey Mysterio is inching closer to a return after a groin tear knocked him out of action—and the WWE legend isn’t sugarcoating how it happened.

Speaking on LA PLATICA, Mysterio broke down the injury that forced him off WrestleMania 41 and revealed his target date to get back in the ring.

The injury went down on the Friday Night SmackDown before WrestleMania 41, when Mysterio took part in a six-man tag match. During the bout, a simple movement turned into a painful setback. Mysterio explained exactly how the freak injury happened.

“So, I was explaining to someone yesterday that I tore my groin. He goes, ‘How did it happen? Was it when they pulled you?’ I said, ‘No…’ The guy that I was wrestling stood in front of me. He bailed out the ring underneath the bottom rope and I went to chase him and when I pushed off with my left leg, I just heard a (rip noise). Like, that’s it? I tore my groin like that? And yeah, usually it happens on the simplest sht.”*

The injury was severe enough to pull Mysterio from his scheduled singles match against El Grande Americano on night two of WrestleMania 41. In his place, AEW star Rey Fenix stepped in.

But the groin tear wasn’t Mysterio’s only issue. While sidelined, he took care of another lingering problem—a busted eardrum. Providing an update on his recovery, Mysterio sounded optimistic about his return timeline.

“Good. Pretty good,” Mysterio said about his recovery progress. “I started my PT. Not to mention, I had a busted eardrum as well so I fixed that during my time off. I’m on the road to recovery. I should be back hopefully by August.”

If everything stays on track, Mysterio could be back before the end of summer 2025—just in time to shake things up on SmackDown heading into the fall season.
