AAA Lucha Libre has announced the passing of Rey Misterio Sr., a trailblazer in the world of Lucha Libre and uncle to WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio. Misterio Sr., born Miguel Ángel López Días, passed away on December 20, 2024, at the age of 66.
Rey Misterio Sr. began his illustrious wrestling career in 1976, becoming a revered figure in the industry. Although he officially retired in 2009, his passion for the sport saw him lace up his boots one final time in 2023, teaming with Aero Star and Mr. Iguana to defeat Hereje, Hijo de Pirata Morgan, and Nightmare Azteca at a global Lucha Libre event.
AAA paid tribute to the legendary luchador, sharing on social media: “Lamentamos el sensible fallecimiento de Miguel Ángel López Días, conocido como Rey Mysterio Sr. Enviamos nuestro más sincero pésame a sus seres queridos y elevamos nuestras oraciones al cielo por su eterno descanso.”
Translated to: “We regret the sensitive death of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Mysterio Sr. We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and we raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest.”
Rey Misterio Sr. had a profound impact on the world of professional wrestling, both as a performer and as a mentor. His nephew, WWE’s Rey Mysterio, carried on his legacy, initially wrestling as Rey Mysterio Jr. before dropping the “Jr.” when he joined WWE in 2002. The two shared memorable moments in the ring, including capturing the WWA Tag Team Championship together in 1995.
Misterio Sr. also found success teaming with other iconic names, including his son, El Hijo del Rey Misterio, and legendary luchador El Dandy.
