Rey Fenix’s time in AEW is officially over, and his next move seems all but confirmed. After months of speculation,

Fightful Select has reported that Fenix is now a free agent and expected to sign with WWE in the near future.

AEW was initially expected to add injury time to Fenix’s contract, which could have kept him locked in for months. Instead, the company has parted ways with him completely. According to Fightful Select, “We’re told that he’s expected to sign with WWE imminently, and Fanatics have already begun preparing merchandise for him, with creative coming up with ideas.”

The situation surrounding Fenix’s AEW exit has been complicated. He and his brother, Penta, were both negotiating with WWE last year, but when AEW caught wind of it, the company extended their deals. Fenix also made “vague allegations about inhumane treatment that AEW denied privately, but ignored publicly.” Sources within AEW believe Fenix had to agree to a non-disparagement clause to secure his release.

Fightful also reported that AEW had actually considered letting Fenix out of his contract in November, but those allegations made things more difficult. Penta, on the other hand, has taken a more diplomatic route, choosing to avoid publicly speaking about his AEW tenure in a negative light.

Creatively, Fenix had been left in limbo. There were no major plans for him in AEW’s recent programming, despite an earlier idea that would have seen him, Penta, and Pac capture the AEW Trios Titles. However, once contract disputes began, those plans were shelved.

Now, WWE seems ready to bring him in alongside Penta. According to a WWE source who spoke with WrestleVotes, “Spoke with a WWE source regarding the Rey Fenix news making the rounds. With him being free and clear, the expectation backstage is that he joins WWE sooner rather than later. Source added they wouldn’t be surprised if Fenix ends up on the WM card but noted there’s no exact timeline in place.”

The door is wide open for Fenix to step into WWE, and with WrestleMania right around the corner, he could make an impact sooner than expected. Whether he jumps straight into a tag team with Penta or establishes himself as a singles star, fans are eagerly waiting to see how WWE uses him.
