AEW Grand Slam: Australia was truly a night full of excellent matches and memorable moments. The show kicked off with a barn burner, as Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay faced Konosuke Takeshita and Kyle Fletcher in a tag team match and now the reason behind the match opening the show has been revealed.

According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, AEW chose to open Grand Slam: Australia with Kenny Omega & Will Ospreay vs. Konosuke Takeshita & Kyle Fletcher to give NBA fans a fresh look at a unique style of wrestling they might not have seen before. After all, many NBA fans were watching the All Star game on TNT right before Grand Slam.

AEW’s decision to start off with the match was met with positive reception from fans as it was undoubtedly the best bout on the card, since it truly showed off all four competitor’s strengths and it was full of incredible spots from start to finish. Omega and Ospreay picked up the win after nailing a solid combination attack on Takeshita.

By carefully planning the match order, AEW aimed to capture the attention of both dedicated wrestling fans and new viewers. With more international events coming up, the company continues to grow, offering high-quality matches that AEW is truly known for now.

Kenny Omega will challenge Konosuke Takeshita for the AEW International Championship at AEW Revolution next month, while Will Ospreay will face Kyle Fletcher in a steel cage match at the same event. Therefore, Grand Slam: Australia was only just the beginning for them and so we’ll have to see how AEW books their respective feuds in the coming weeks.
