Seth Rollins vs GUNTHER is officially locked in for WrestleMania 42 — and now the real reason behind WWE’s decision has come out.

After the March 30, 2026 episode of RAW at Madison Square Garden ended with chaos — including Rollins attacking Paul Heyman and GUNTHER choking Rollins out before pointing at the WrestleMania sign — fans were left wondering how this match suddenly came together. Now there’s an answer.

Speaking on the post-RAW show, Sean Ross Sapp broke down exactly why WWE pivoted to this matchup, pointing to multiple injuries forcing a reshuffle behind the scenes.

“What we’re seeing is the adjustment for Rey Mysterio being sidelined with an injury, which was GUNTHER’s plan, and Bron Breakker, despite being backstage, still being sidelined — and that was Seth Rollins’s plan.”

That explanation connects the dots. GUNTHER was originally expected to be tied to Rey Mysterio, while Seth Rollins had plans involving Bron Breakker. But with both of those options taken off the table due to injury and timing, WWE had to make a call. Sapp then summed up how that led directly to the new WrestleMania direction: “So, you put them together, and there you go.”

What played out on RAW wasn’t just a random confrontation — it was the result of WWE adjusting major WrestleMania plans on the fly after losing two different directions at the same time.

With Rollins now cleared and GUNTHER already positioned as a dominant force, the company pivoted quickly, turning a backup situation into one of the biggest matches on the WrestleMania 42 card.

And judging by how intense their first encounter was — including Rollins taking a brutal choke-out and GUNTHER standing tall — WWE is clearly leaning into this as a major feud heading into Las Vegas. Sometimes the biggest matches come from unexpected changes — and this one is a direct result of exactly that.
