AJ Styles didn’t just walk away from the ring—he made a very specific choice about what he wanted to do next, and now Triple H is explaining why.
After Styles transitioned into a behind-the-scenes WWE role focused on scouting and mentoring talent, a new update reveals how that decision actually came together—and what led him away from other roles in the company. While speaking on What Do You Wanna Talk About? with Cody Rhodes, Triple H explained that Styles made it clear early on that while he was done wrestling, he wasn’t done with the business itself.
“I see that in the now. Like AJ Styles just retired, so at the end AJ was like, ‘Man, you know, I don’t want to be done with the business—I want to be done wrestling.’”
Triple H then shared insight into Styles’ mindset during his final match, revealing that Styles already knew in that moment that it was time to step away from in-ring competition.
“I don’t think I’m betraying his confidence here, but even in his last match, he was telling me, ‘I so know I’m done because when I was out there in that last match, I was thinking, let’s just get this over with. I want to get to the end.’”
From there, Triple H noted that AJ Styles explored other possible roles within WWE—but quickly realized that some of the more traditional post-wrestling paths weren’t a fit for him.
“AJ came in, he sat in some creative meetings, sat in some producing meetings. I think he realized, like, ‘Oof, the writing thing’s not for me. The producer thing, I don’t think is for me.’”
That’s when things clicked. According to Triple H, the Phenomenal One found what actually motivated him—working directly with younger talent and helping them grow from the ground up. And once that became clear, WWE leaned into it and built his current role around that strength.
“What I really like is getting to these young kids and spotting talent, and then trying to help fan the flames of the little spark that’s there and try to make them something more on the developmental side. So great—let’s utilize him in that and grab those talents there.”
That explanation ties everything together. Styles’ current role scouting talent, working with NXT and developmental prospects, and helping guide wrestlers across different levels of WWE isn’t random—it’s exactly what he chose after realizing where he fits best.
So in the end, AJ Styles didn’t just retire—he shifted into a role that keeps him close to the part of wrestling he still loves, without forcing himself into positions that didn’t feel right.
