JCW’s recent title change shocked fans in Miami, but the real story behind why Cokane became champion wasn’t about the cash-in—it came down to reliability and availability.
During the show, Ken Anderson had just defeated Disco Ray when Cokane rushed in to cash in his world title opportunity. The surprise attack flipped Anderson’s victory into a sudden loss, giving Cokane the JCW Championship in dramatic fashion.
That moment grabbed attention, especially after highlights aired on JCW Lunacy, but the bigger explanation came later during JCW Backstage Lunacy when Violent J broke down the real reasoning behind the title change.
Violent J made it clear the move wasn’t random and wasn’t just about popularity. He explained that scheduling problems played a major role, especially when it came to Anderson’s availability. According to him, JCW needed a champion who could consistently appear at shows, and that ultimately led to the decision to move the title.
“Well, you know, in that particular example, um we were having problems with Mr. Anderson and his scheduling, you know what I'm saying? The shows he was available to do, you know, he's got family and everything, he's got a lot going on, you know what I mean? And the shows he was able to do and everything. Um, we're just we needed more, you know what I'm saying? We need we need more as our world champion, you know what I mean? So, we figured we had to put the belt on somebody else so we can have a champion that's around more often.
You know what I'm saying? If I'm going to be honest, you know, and Cocaine was right there. I mean, he's the most reliable guy we got on the roster. You know what I'm saying? He's he's super super over. I think out of the whole roster, out of all the new characters that Lunacy kind of came up with, Cocaine was the first one to get a chant in his name, you know what I mean? Where the crowds chanting their name, you know what I mean? Cocaine was the first one to actually get over.
And um he's super over now. Especially when we go out west, man, they love him. They love the [ __ ] out of them, you know? And so we wanted to put the belt on a JCW guy. I'm not always a fan of putting a belt on like somebody that's not a full-timer at JCW but has a big name, you know what I mean? I like to stick it on JCW guys that are our own soldiers that are going to be at every show, things like that.”
The explanation shows the decision wasn’t just about the Miami surprise—it was about long-term consistency. Violent J mentioned that Cokane’s reliability, strong fan reactions, and ability to appear regularly made him the right choice at the right time.
Do you think JCW made the right call putting the title on Cokane because of reliability, or should a big-name champion always stay on top?
