Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton at WrestleMania 42 might not have been WWE’s idea alone — because a new report says Rhodes himself pushed for the matchup.
Self Made Pro revealed during a Self Made Session on March 9, 2026 that Rhodes himself reportedly pushed for the WrestleMania match against Orton. According to the report, Rhodes had known for weeks that Orton was going to be his opponent on the biggest stage of the year.
“Cody Rhodes knew that that was the match that was happening for a while. Cody Rhodes, as early as February, knew he was facing Randy.”
The report also explained that the American Nightmare actively supported the idea of the matchup because he believed it would be a major WrestleMania-caliber match between himself and the Viper.
“And I can tell you that Cody Rhodes did push for Randy because he believed that was a big-time matchup.”
The update comes after Rhodes regained the Undisputed WWE Championship from Drew McIntyre on the March 6 episode of SmackDown, a result that led to heavy backlash online from fans who believed McIntyre should have entered WrestleMania as champion.
Despite the criticism, WWE’s direction hasn’t changed. Rhodes is currently set to defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Orton at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas. If the report is accurate, the main event matchup may have come together because Rhodes personally wanted the bout with his former Legacy stablemate.
