Randy Orton and John Cena spent decades colliding in some of WWE’s most iconic main events—and while Orton couldn’t be there in person to witness Cena’s retirement match, he made sure to honor the moment.
Cena wrestled what is believed to be his final match on Saturday, December 13th at Saturday Night’s Main Event, where he lost to GUNTHER in Washington, D.C. It was an emotional send-off, closing the curtain on a legendary in-ring career. But Orton—arguably Cena’s greatest rival—was halfway around the world on WWE business, promoting Riyadh Season and the Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia. Despite the distance, Orton posted a message on Instagram, expressing admiration for Cena and gratitude for their shared journey:
“I broke into the wrestling business and grew up for the past 2 decades alongside @johncena. I wrestled with or against him 100 times, at least. I would have enjoyed being there in DC for #wwe #snme and witness his emotional send off into retirement. But I know if ANYONE understands my absence, it’s John, because I was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia #KSA promoting #riyadhseason and #royalrumble.”
Orton also revealed the two exchanged messages on the morning of Cena’s final match, adding:
“I was honored to speak with him on such a big day. I look forward to following John’s career in Hollywood AND beyond. Sky’s the limit with this guy.”
The Viper didn’t hold back in crediting Cena for not just inspiring fans, but elevating the locker room and being a true friend to his family:
“Thanks for being so good to my family over the years and thanks for making the locker room a better place. Take care John, and I’ll see ya around.”
Cena and Orton last faced off earlier this year at WWE Backlash as part of Cena’s farewell tour. Their rivalry will go down as one of the most defining feuds in WWE history, with countless title matches and unforgettable moments.
Will we see Cena and Orton share a final on-screen moment before it’s all said and done? Should Cena’s last match have included Randy Orton? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
