R-Truth’s “Ron Cena” gimmick has become one of the most unexpectedly beloved characters in WWE this year—and now, he’s finally revealed where the whole idea came from.
During a new appearance on the Two Man Power Trip podcast, Truth gave a perfectly on-brand answer that only he could deliver. When asked about the origin of “Ron Cena”—the character he debuted while parodying and honoring John Cena during Cena’s farewell run—Truth explained it with deadpan absurdity:
“That’s 23andMe. Yeah. 23andMe. I just did the blood work and the swab. That’s all I did.”
The comment came after the host praised the creativity of the gimmick, and Truth, never breaking character, acted like it was the result of actual science. In Truth’s world, a DNA test is enough to justify matching outfits, mannerisms, and a near-spiritual bond with the 17-time World Champion.
This update comes after Truth previously opened up about how meaningful it was to stand across from Cena during Saturday Night’s Main Event. At the time, he reflected on the electric crowd and what felt like a symbolic passing of the torch.
“That’s wonderful. It’s overwhelming, man. You can’t really find the words. I’m very grateful. Every moment meant something to me… Being across from him, hearing the eruption, that was the birth of Ron Cena right there. I won’t forget that moment — him looking at me like he was passing the torch. The arena was packed, sold out. That visual is something I’ll always remember — in my eyes, my heart, my mind. I’m getting goosebumps just talking about it now.”
Truth also commented on the idea that “Ron Cena” keeps Cena’s spirit alive even when he’s not around:
“I never thought of it that way, but you’ve got a good point. If you have one twin brother who’s gone, you still have a piece of him, right? Yeah, we’re twins. We look more alike than our other brother.”
So if you were wondering whether there was some deep creative meeting behind “Ron Cena,” there wasn’t. Just a swab, a blood test, and the brilliance of one of WWE’s most entertaining minds.
