Penta’s long-awaited tag team reunion with Rey Fenix at AAA’s Guerra de Titanes on December 20 is now hanging by a thread—and it’s not up to him.

Despite recent optimism from fans following Penta’s rehab progress, WWE hasn’t officially cleared him for in-ring action after the serious shoulder injury he suffered during a November episode of RAW. According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE sources are split on the decision—leaving Penta’s status at a flat 50/50. Dave Meltzer explained the situation in detail:

“The last word we got was that Penta was touch-and-go for the 12/20 show in Guadalajara where he was to team with Fenix for the first time in WWE against Grande Americano & Dominik Mysterio. His doctor was non-committal and basically said WWE would decide. A WWE source with knowledge of the situation a few days ago described it as 50/50.”

The injury happened during a match with Solo Sikoa when a hurricanrana spot off the barricade went wrong. The bout was abruptly stopped, and cameras cut to commercial as officials rushed Penta backstage. Since then, the luchador has been undergoing treatment under Dr. Odiseo, who offered a hopeful—but ultimately cautious—update.

“An update on Penta — I just saw him today. We’ve had almost two weeks of treatment and we’ve made a lot of progress. Obviously, who knows if he’ll be able to return for December 20th, Guerra de Titanes and all that. Even though he’s doing very well and I see him with a lot of enthusiasm, and he’s a great person who is fighting against everything involving his shoulder and all those things that could hold him back, we’re doing well. But it practically doesn’t depend on Penta or on me. It depends on the company — if they consider that it’s okay for him to return. Those are their criteria.”

Originally, Penta and Fenix were set to reunite against Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano, following a fiery challenge issued at AAA’s Alianzas event. But the injury has cast serious doubt on the tag match—and with AAA’s marquee event just days away, the dream scenario may not become reality.

Even if Penta is medically fit, the final decision comes down to WWE. And with their growing involvement in how contracted stars work outside appearances, the call to protect his long-term health may override any short-term nostalgia pop.

Should WWE clear Penta to compete, or is the risk too high just weeks after a shoulder injury? Drop your take in the comments—we’re watching closely as the countdown to Guerra de Titanes continues.
