Paul Wight isn’t riding off into the sunset anytime soon. The wrestling legend made it loud and clear during a guest spot on Notsam Wrestling Live! — he’s working his way back into the ring and he’s dead serious about making it count.
Wight revealed that he recently underwent back surgery, one of several procedures he’s had in the last few years. But despite the wear and tear, Wight isn’t tapping out.
“Dude, I’m hoping — it’s just a week-by-week thing,” he said when asked about his return timeline. “I had a small back surgery done a couple months ago… You play long enough, the bill comes due. I’ve had a major surgery every frickin’ year! For about the past five — whether it’s a knee surgery or a hip surgery… I feel like that old pickup truck. Like, OK, what’s broken now?”
Still, Wight isn’t whining. He’s rebuilding — and he’s got support from AEW top brass, especially Tony Khan.
“Tony Khan’s been extremely supportive, so we’re just plugging away. I don’t plan on going anywhere. I like being in AEW.”
But make no mistake — he’s not coming back to just exist. Wight wants to compete, and he’s got no interest in being a charity case on TV.
“The last thing I’m gonna do is go out in that ring and have people go, ‘aww, poor Paul. They should just kill him, like Old Yeller or something.’ We’re not gonna have that. If I’m not out there humping and bumping and getting after everything and slapping people’s souls out of their chest… then it’s time to hang up the boots.”
He made it clear that it’s not about nostalgia — it’s about still bringing it in the ring. Right now, it’s all about recovery and regaining that explosiveness.
“We’re still moving forward, there’s progress being made. Everything I’m dealing with now is mostly soft tissue, getting that stuff to work… we’ll get that back and we’ll be in the ring.”
And when he does return? Wight is ready to make an impact — literally and financially.
“Trust me, I see the opportunity in AEW, I see the chances too. To have fun with the talent in the back, to entertain the fans, the financial gains for being able to compete at a more full-time schedule. Yeah, believe me, I’m salivating over here, 100 percent.”
Wight most recently appeared during the AEW Full Gear Tailgate Brawl, working commentary and even getting physically involved as Big Boom A.J. and Q.T. Marshall took on Rocky Romero & Trent Beretta.
Paul Wight isn’t done — not by a long shot. Between physical rehab, his hunger to compete, and a locker room full of fresh matchups, the future’s wide open for the man once known as The Big Show.
