AEW’s media future just got a clearer picture — and it centers around streaming consolidation.
According to Variety, Paramount Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, the plan — pending regulatory approval — is to merge Paramount+ with WBD’s streaming platform, HBO Max. That matters for AEW.
Right now, HBO Max streams AEW Dynamite and AEW Collision weekly, offers AEW pay-per-views for purchase, and houses an AEW event archive. If the merger goes through, AEW content would likely sit inside a much larger unified streaming platform with expanded global reach.
Paramount CEO David Ellison laid out the vision during an investor call, emphasizing scale and global positioning.
“We will combine the streaming portfolios of the two companies into one stronger platform over the coming years. there are more than 200 million subscribers today, and more than 100 countries and territories worldwide, positioning us to compete effectively with the leading streaming services in today’s marketplace.”
“As we said, we do plan to put the two services together, which today gives us a little over 200 million direct to consumer subscribers. We think that really positions us to compete with the leaders in the space. At Paramount, by the middle of this year, we’ll have completed the consolidation of our three services under one unified stack, and you can see us taking a similar approach to this platform going forward. And we think the combined offering, and given the amount of content and what we can do from the tech side, really will put us in a position to be able to compete with the most scaled players in [Direct to Consumer].”
Paramount’s purchase would include WBD’s cable assets — including TBS and TNT, the current cable homes of AEW programming. That’s a key distinction, especially since Netflix had no intention of acquiring cable channels in its past discussions, which would have created a very different situation for AEW’s linear TV presence.
If regulators approve the deal, AEW could find itself on a consolidated global streaming platform backed by more than 200 million subscribers, while still maintaining cable distribution through TBS and TNT under Paramount’s umbrella.
For now, AEW’s current media deal runs through at least 2027. But this streaming merger plan adds a significant new layer to what the company’s long-term home could look like.
