While many assumed Oba Femi was main roster-bound after dropping the NXT Championship, the man known as “The Ruler” used his time off to bulk up, reconnect with family, and mentally prepare for what’s next.
During his appearance on The Ringer Wrestling Podcast, Oba opened up about the downtime between losing his title and making his surprise return. While most fans expected a straight shot to RAW or SmackDown, Oba had other plans — and some unexpected detours.
When asked what filled the gap between title reign and comeback, Oba explained he got back to basics — and back to work.
“I was bulking — this huge, this huge bulk session. I was like, you know what, while I’m away, let me eat. I went home also, you know, saw my family. So it’s always good to touch base with your roots, because sometimes you start to forget and feel alone. But you have to always remember that your family is out there — you just have to reach.”
But that wasn’t all. Oba stayed sharp, physically and mentally, expecting to be featured in WWE’s Last Time is Now tournament — until those plans changed.
“I was just, you know, I was honestly expecting to be in the ‘Last Time is Now’ tournament, but that didn’t quite work out because me being home and, you know, and all that stuff. And fair play to Ricky, you know, he was the one who initiated my absence. But as I said, it wasn’t the same when he was champion. You know, the real champion is back. The real champion is home.”
Oba Femi’s mindset shows a level of self-awareness and preparation far beyond his years. Whether he’s lifting, healing, or waiting in the shadows, the man is always building toward something — and it looks like that time off might have only made him more dangerous.
