Oba Femi is gearing up to defend his NXT Championship against Myles Borne at NXT Battleground on May 25, but the champ admits he didn’t see Borne coming as his next challenger.

During a conversation with Jim Varsallone, Femi opened up about the unexpected outcome of the Battle Royal that determined his opponent.

“I didn’t have Miles as, you know, my pick to win,” Femi said. “I thought maybe, you know, maybe Jon was going to win or maybe someone like Sean Spears who had more experience was going to win. But, I mean, Miles has been secretly the MVP of NXT for a while now and I think he’s deserving of this opportunity. He won fair and square. No shenanigans.”

The 25-man Battle Royal on the May 6 episode of NXT featured some surprise names, including Ethan Page, Je’Von Evans, Shawn Spears, and Elijah, who made a shocking return to the NXT ring. In the end, Borne outlasted the competition, eliminating Spears and Page to secure his spot against Femi at Battleground.

Despite not expecting Borne to come out on top, Femi is ready for the challenge. “I’m looking forward to my bout with Miles. It’s going to be a great challenge. He’s earned this shot, and I’m ready to defend my title,” Femi said.

Myles Borne’s rise to the top of the NXT contender’s list has been a surprise, but now he’s got the biggest match of his career ahead of him. Will he be the one to end Oba Femi’s reign, or will Femi continue his dominant run as NXT Champion?
