Nixon Newell was let go by WWE back in November 2024 and many fans felt she deserved better. That’s not all as Newell has now admitted that she started laughing when she got the release call.
While speaking on the Sappenin’ podcast, Nixon Newell talked about the phone call she got when WWE released her. She found it kind of funny because she thought she might have annoyed the person on the other end.
It happened just two days before she was set to go on a cruise for her birthday, and she joked that it was like they planned it that way. It was actually the second time WWE had fired her, once right after her birthday and now a week before it.
“Ah, it was a phone call. It’s funny though, ’cause I think I p***** him off. Two days later I was going on a cruise for my birthday, right? Bastards—it’s like they knew. They fired me twice. The first time was right after my birthday, and this time it was a week before my birthday.”
Newell said she was getting ready for her trip when someone called and asked if it was her. When she confirmed, he asked how she was doing, and she replied that it depended on how the call was going to go.
The caller then told her they were going to exercise her 90-day non-compete, and she started laughing. She didn’t think he liked that at all. When he asked why she was laughing, she explained that she had seen it coming. She’d been off TV for a long time, her pitches were going nowhere, and it was obvious to her that she was going to be let go.
“So I’m getting ready to go on my cruise, and then this guy calls and says, ‘Is this Tegan?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah.’ He goes, ‘How you doing?’ and I say, ‘Depends on how this phone call goes.’
Then he says, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna exercise your 90 days.’ I just started laughing. I don’t think he appreciated me laughing. He’s like, ‘What’s so funny?’ and I told him, ‘I knew this was coming.’ He goes, ‘What do you mean you knew this was coming?’
I said, ‘Big f***** yes—I’ve been off TV for God knows how long, nothing’s happening, I’ve been pitching stuff every week and getting nowhere. It’s pretty obvious I’m getting fired.’”
The caller then told her they’d still pay her for the 90 days but apologized for the situation. Nixon thanked him and said she actually appreciated being fired and was glad to be leaving. This surprised him, and she explained that her mental health had been suffering, so she was relieved. She figured she probably upset him by laughing and by admitting she didn’t want to be there anymore.
“Then he says, ‘Oh, um, we’ll still pay you for the 90 days, but sorry about that.’ I told him, ‘Oh no, thank you so much, I appreciate that. I appreciate you firing me, I’m glad to be gone.’ He’s like, ‘What?!’ I said, ‘Yeah, I’m just happy to be gone. My mental health was ruined.’ So I think I p***** him off by A, laughing, and B, saying I didn’t want to be there anymore.”
This comes after Nixon Newell already called out WWE for making empty promises, among other things. Regardless, Newell is back on the indies and is determined to create her own path now, so fans are excited to see what she will accomplish this year.
