Nikki Garcia and Artem Chigvintsev had a storybook relationship from the outside, but things exploded in a violent episode that destroyed their marriage. Looking back, the former Nikki Bella has regrets about not preparing for the worst regarding marrying her former Dancing with the Stars partner.
Nikki Garcia opened up about her divorce from Artem Chigvintsev during a recent episode of The Nikki & Brie Show on SiriusXM. In a conversation with her sister Brie, Nikki spoke about her experience and shared regret about not having signed a prenuptial agreement before her marriage to the dancer.
“I used to think when someone wanted me to sign a prenup, I took it as, ‘Do they not love me as much?’ And now that I’ve experienced it, and now learned and educated myself on it—now I get it.”
Nikki Garcia went on to explain that if she ever remarries, she would take a different approach. After all, she has acquired a very good life for herself, and some states have unforgiving divorce laws when it comes to splitting up property.
“I will never—if I ever marry, which I doubt I will—but if I do, I’m not gonna be the ‘never say never’… or I will be the ‘never say never.’ That yeah, prenup no matter what. Doesn’t take my love away. It’s just because of what I’ve been through. I’m not gonna go through what I just went through.”
Brie Garcia responded by saying, “Now we see what Goldie Hawn was onto.” Then Nikki continued as she spoke about the challenges she faced during the mediation process with Artem Chigvintsev.
“No. Honestly, it’s really, really hard. And you just realize there’s so much control you don’t have. You’re sitting there in mediation, and when you’ve built companies, and you’ve built an incredible savings and all these things—401k, all of it—and a person wants a piece of everything, and you’re sitting there fighting for your hard work… it’s hard. But I put myself in that position. I just never thought I’d be in that position.”
Nikki Garcia and Artem Chigvintsev’s separation followed an incident in August 2024 that led to Chigvintsev’s arrest on suspicion of felony domestic violence. Garcia filed for divorce the following month, citing irreconcilable differences.
This was a messy situation. Both parties filed for restraining orders before eventually withdrawing them and settling the divorce in November. The Napa County District Attorney’s Office declined to pursue charges.
We will have to see what Nikki Garcia gets into next with her career. We know that she will play things very safe when it comes to protecting her financial life when entering her next relationship.
