Nikki Bella challenged Becky Lynch for the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Title at Clash in Paris but lost the match. She ended up getting tons of hate after hitting a botched volley kick, which really missed the mark and now Bella admits she didn’t want to hit the move again.
While speaking on the Nikki and Brie Show, Nikki Bella opened up about the online hate she received after botching her volley kick during her match against Becky Lynch at Clash in Paris, and how that moment almost stopped her from using the move again. Heading into her Raw match against Asuka, she told her producer and a coach that she didn’t feel like attempting the volley kick because of the backlash.
One of WWE’s veteran coaches, a wrestling legend, encouraged her to go for it anyway. He reminded Bella that the move had been built up over many years and that one bad night shouldn’t end it.
The producer explained that during his era there was no social media, so when something failed in the ring, wrestlers simply tried again without fear of online criticism. For him, failure was just part of the process and never a reason to abandon a move.
“I wanted to share something from Raw because I feel like it applies to anything we do in life when it comes to failure and success.
When I was talking with my producer—there was another coach around—they were telling me to hit the volley kick, and I said, ‘I don’t think I want to tonight.’ It was because of everything that happened at the PLE in Paris and all the hate I got online. I just didn’t feel like doing it.
One of the old-school wrestlers—one of the legends who’s a coach now—looked at me and said, ‘No, you will hit it tonight and you’re going to hit it damn good. That is a great move that you’ve built up for many years, and just because it didn’t work one night doesn’t mean you stop doing it.’
He told me, ‘I didn’t grow up with social media. When I had failures in the ring, I wasn’t getting destroyed online. We failed at something, we just redid it. We just kept going. There was never a thought of, “I’m not doing that again.” Sometimes it just doesn’t work. So no—you’re going to do it, and you’re going to do it so great that we’ll build that move up again and make it mean something.'”
With support from her producer, Nikki Bella decided to trust the advice and hit the volley kick on Raw this week, successfully landing it. She said the experience taught her a lesson that goes beyond wrestling.
Bella noted that social media can magnify failure and create insecurities that discourage people from trying again, but having someone push her to step out of her comfort zone reminded her of the importance of perseverance.
“I said, ‘You know what? You’re right.’ My producer agreed, and I went out and did it. But you know what? That lesson goes beyond wrestling. Especially with social media, when we fail people want to attack us or remind us of that failure. It creates insecurity, a mental trigger that makes us afraid to try again. Having someone tell me, ‘No—do it,’ and push me out of my comfort zone was powerful. It could have failed again, but instead it worked, and it taught me something important about perseverance.”
Nikki Bella actually ended up having a pretty solid match with the Empress of Tomorrow on the September 8th edition of Raw, even though she tapped out to Asuka. So now we’ll have to see how Bella will continue to be booked in the coming weeks, as the sky’s the limit for her.
